Only reason I required regitration for commenting is that I thought it helped with comments SPAM. In your experience is Akismet enough?
I use SpamBam ( http://www.thespanner.co.uk/category/spam-bam/ ) and it seems to work fine. But as I don’t get a huge amount of comments anyway I can’t be too sure – maybe it’s killing spam comments all the time and I don’t know about it?
One got through once, and as I have moderation turned on I just killed it… I think it’s worth dropping the login requirement, installing something like SpamBam, seeing what happens, and then bringing back authentication if all hell breaks loose.
